Eph. 2:8 For by grace ye are saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast!
by: Gil and Cynthia Fleshman
Our family’s desire is to give God all the glory for the life that He has blessed us with. Our farm is His vision and His blessing. We always say now that our life message is, that if God saved us, then there is hope for anyone. You see, we were just about as lost as the day is long. We would have called ourselves Christians, but we weren’t. We were living our life for ourselves not for the LORD. There was not really any difference in how we lived compared to how the rest of the lost world lives. Thankfully God grabbed our hearts through His Word in 2001, around the time our first daughter was born. He turned our life right side up! We began devouring His Word, actually trying to live what He told us; and then we went on a search for fellowship with people who were actually attempting to live the Bible as well. Most of our friends and family thought we had gone crazy, and they were right! Our life dramatically changed when we gave it to the LORD. We wanted to follow His Word. It was a lonely road for a while. We used to joke with each other that we had no friends. 🙂 Then God began blessing us with fellowship and we are so thankful to know so many sweet Christian friends now. Looking back, we are thankful for that time because we know it was God we were following, not man. We only knew one family who home-schooled, and there was no one who was living the way we are now. Then, we saw the very first Duggar show, 14 Children and Pregnant Again in about 2003, or 2004. www.duggarfamily.com They were living it! We saw the fruit of the LORD in their older children. That’s what we wanted. So we found IBLP, ATI and more information. We are so thankful for Mr. Gothard and his ministry. God had used him to change our lives. www.iblp.com We attended our first Basic Seminar and went to Big Sandy, the yearly ATI home school conference in Texas. We met the Duggars and after spending some time in their home both for church and for a great weekend visit, we found they are genuine, humble, loving, and REAL Christians. They are so hospitable, and their love for the LORD is contagious. They are doing wonderful things for the LORD and we are so happy for them. We don’t get to see them as much as we’d like to, but we will be eternally grateful for their example. It’s a harder road when you have sowed the world and it’s ways into your heart for 25 years, but God is a God of miracles and He loves us so much. He meets us where we are and walks with us step by step as we are faithful to trust and follow Him.
We have found all throughout our walk, the LORD has challenged us with whether or not we really believed His Word. As it was with Eve when the devil asked her, “did God really say?” As we have read the Bible and found areas that we were not living out the scriptures, we found ourselves faced with making a hard choice. Would we trust the LORD and live by His principles or trust instead in our own ways? One of these areas is how the LORD feels about children. Are they a blessing or a burden? Could we really trust God with our family size? The Bible says children are a blessing from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward. Psalms 127:3 So we decided to give the LORD complete control of our family size. We were challenged again on this topic when our little girl, Sarah Lyn, went to be with the LORD in November of 2006. Our doctor told us that she felt we would not be able to carry another child past 20 to 24 weeks and that it would be life threatening for Cynthia to carry another child. We struggled greatly with whether or not to leave our child planning in the hands of the LORD. Could we take this area back after having given it to God? After much prayer and study we followed where the LORD gave us His peace and we left Cynthia’s life and our child planning in the hands of the LORD. We are not saying everyone should follow what we have chosen. Every situation is different and we encourage other Christians who have come to us for advice with medical decisions, to do their own research, pray a lot, get a lot of wise counsel, and then follow where the LORD gives you His peace. God has since blessed us with 4 more girls (so far) after we lost Sarah. Our last little girl, Mary Katherine, was born in January 2014! Even Job only got back twice what the LORD took. Praise the LORD!
Another area of our life the LORD challenged us with was home schooling and the biblical precepts of raising our children as God instructs. Could we really walk by the way with our children and instill God’s Word and ways in them if we weren’t with them for the majority of the time? (Duet. 11:19) But how would we know what to teach them? Were we “qualified”? We prayed took the plunge and followed what we believed the LORD was calling us to do. We have found that we love teaching our children, they are our best friends, and we love spending time with them. The LORD has greatly blessed this decision as we have seen our children grow in Him and our relationships with each of them have grown stronger. Their character growth has been amazing, not to mention how much more quickly they have learned the academics in the curriculum we use for homeschooling. Both of our oldest sons have now graduated, each around the age of 16-17, and both were already exceeding the states “requirements” for a high school graduate.
Another area of our life the LORD challenged us with was with a mothers working outside the home. Could Cynthia really be a keeper of the home if she wasn’t home for the majority of the time? Cynthia yearned to be home with her children full time but felt it was financially impossible. We prayed and then took that leap and have had the thrill of praying for our needs and watching the LORD provide in miraculous ways. We joy in seeing all the the LORD has provided for us over the years. Additionally Cynthia is vitally instrumental in making our small farm successful. A lot of the income we earn is by the work of her hands! This had greatly increased ours and our children’s faith.
Another area was financial debt. Is debt God’s plan for a Christian or is debt bondage? The Bible says that the borrower is the servant to the lender. Do we really need all the stuff the world tells us we need? Or do we need more time together as a family? We had the big home and the big mortgage. We had the “American Dream” but it wasn’t God’s plan for us. We talked to two realtor friends and found out we were upside down on our house because we had taken out a second mortgage to pay for our American Dream, or what I now call our American Nightmare! We were told we would need about $10,000 at closing to be free of our mortgage, as the house wasn’t worth the debt we had on it. The problem was we didn’t have an extra $10 grand! After casually talking to Cynthia’s Dad about our vision to slow down and simplify our life, he offered us 2.5 acres that he had owned for a long time. We didn’t even know he had this property! His words were, if you kids want to move to the country, I have a couple of acres you can have. Oh yes, we wanted it! It was mostly cross timbers with only a well, but it was ours! Long story short, in May of 2005 we sold our house ourselves figuring that if God wanted to sell it, He didn’t need a realtor.
The house sold in 4 days and they wanted to close in 3 weeks! We sold it for exactly the $10,000 more than we were told we could get for it, and if that wasn’t enough, the mother of the people who bought it was a realtor, so she did all the paperwork for us! Remember, where God guides, He provides!
Praise the LORD!
That brought here us to the country. There are many more stories along our journey than these, and we are still learning more and being challenged everyday.
In 2009, our oldest son Sean joined the Army. That was a season of trusting God and letting go like no other we’d been through. We missed him beyond words. As we do not get to see him often, we miss his presence in our home everyday. The LORD comforts us with His grace. It’s the same God watching over us that is watching over him.
Skipping ahead to 2011, Gil really felt lead to work at home beside his children. He felt that the LORD had given us this land and surely we could do something on it to provide for our family. So in February 2011 Gil came home from the corporate world to try and make this vision a reality. He worked a couple years through the winter taking the summers off, as we continued to develop our little farm. He does currently full time for a family friend, but still desires to come home when the LORD allows. We have also developed a strong belief in eating wisely without all the modern food chemicals from the grocery store, and trying to produce our own food off the land. Realizing not everyone has these same desires or capabilities; our vision, and our farm, was now born. This is what we believe God wants us to do! Our main garden is about 20,000 square feet of 45 raised rows. We produce leafy greens, spinach, peas, carrots, potatoes, green beans, tomatoes, zucchini, squashes, fall squashes, onions, radishes, turnips, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, okra, herbs, strawberries, blackberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, and anything else we can possibly fit in or think of! We are always ready to try something new! We love for people to come out to the farm, shop the garden, and share any gardening wisdom they have learned along the way as well. We also produce a high quality goat milk, goats milk soap, and raise farm fresh eggs. We sell mostly through our CSA program and from our farm stand located at the west gate entrance to our property. At the end of 2012 God provided the funds to allow us to become 100% debt free. We really learned a lot about contentment and living frugally during those years. (1 Timothy 6:6) I know God used that time to strengthen our character and grow us closer to Him.
God has blessed our many decisions to follow, trust, and obey Him; and we delight in seeing Him continue to lead, guide, and provide for our family.
We hope to see you soon!
Gil, Cynthia, Dylan, Alyssa, Daniel, Timothy, Abigail, Emily, Hannah, and Mary Katherine!
Now we have a question for you.
Do you think you can get to Heaven by being a good person?
Yes or No
The correct answer is No. Think about it! If you can get to Heaven by being a good person, then why did Jesus have to die on the cross??? The Bible teaches that Salvation (going to Heaven) is a free gift. Ephesians 2:8-9 says: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast. Nothing we “do” can get us to heaven. In fact, none of us even deserve to go to Heaven. It is God in His infinite wisdom and mercy that has chosen to allow ANY of us to go to Heaven.
So what must I do to get to Heaven?
You must realize that you cannot work your way to Heaven. That Jesus did the work for you when He died on the cross for your sins, and trust in His shed blood to save you.
(See Rom.Ch. 3)
You must be willing to repent.
Repentance is an attitude that “says” My sinful ways are so
wrong. I am so sorry that I have broken God’s commands. By
God’s grace I am going to change. I am going God’s way, not my own.
I choose to forsake my evil ways and I choose to turn and
go God’s way. Acts 17:30 says: And the times of ignorance God
winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent.
Jesus said in Luke 13:3 Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
You must by faith, accept and believe on Jesus Christ as the Lord (king, boss) of your life. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
My friend, Jesus loves you. He wants to adopt you into His family. God is a just and perfectly righteous Judge. A good Judge does not let you go if you have broken the law. When the law is broken, you have to pay. Jesus made the payment. Will you accept it? Please give your life to Him in a prayer of faith and baptism.
Dear Lord Jesus,
I realize I am guilty. I have sinned. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I realize that I cannot work my way to heaven. I realize that You have done all the works for me by shedding Your blood for my sins. Thank you, Jesus.
I repent, I turn from all my wrong ways to Your ways. Please come into my life, I give You the right to be boss of my life. Please make me the person You want me to be. Thank you for saving me. Help me to do Your will each day. You died for me, help me now to live for You.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
Now go out and find a bible believing church where you can be baptized and grow in the faith and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ!
